Your blood pressure is trying to tell you something.
You check your blood pressure and the numbers are higher than you'd like.
Maybe you've been told:
“Watch your salt.”
But what if there's more to the story?
High blood pressure can have many everyday contributors, and sometimes the important clues are hiding in places you wouldn't expect.
8 everyday things that can push blood pressure higher
1. Too much sodium
Sodium doesn't only come from the salt shaker. A large amount comes from packaged, prepared and restaurant foods.
2. Not enough movement
Regular physical activity helps support healthy blood vessels and can help lower blood pressure.
3. Poor or inadequate sleep
Not getting enough sleep regularly is associated with increased risk of high blood pressure. Sleep apnea can also contribute.
4. Chronic stress
Stress can temporarily raise blood pressure, and ongoing stress may also affect the habits that influence blood pressure—such as eating, drinking, smoking and physical activity.
5. Weight and metabolic health
Excess weight can place additional strain on the cardiovascular system and is associated with increased risk of hypertension. Diabetes and other metabolic conditions can also increase risk.
6. Alcohol and tobacco
Both can contribute to elevated blood pressure.
7. Medications and everyday products
This one surprises people. Some decongestants, NSAID pain relievers such as ibuprofen and naproxen, corticosteroids and certain other medications can raise blood pressure.
8. What's happening underneath the surface
Kidney problems, sleep apnea, thyroid problems and other medical conditions can contribute to hypertension. Family history and getting older also increase risk.
The question I want people to ask is:
“Why is MY blood pressure elevated?”
Because two people can have the same blood-pressure reading and have very different things contributing to it.
That's where a more personalized approach can be valuable.
